On hopeful new album, Cyril Neville celebrates New Orleans music, family and friends

A couple of years ago, Cyril Neville spent Thanksgiving morning at the Orleans Justice Center. Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield had invited the New Orleans funk legend to join him and his band for an early concert for jail staff and a group of incarcerated people residing at OJC.

There were a lot of young people in the crowd, Neville says, and he felt the need to give them some advice.

“I said, ‘Look, y’all might be in here right now, but just remember you are the master of your destiny. You’re the captain of your soul, and you can change this when you leave here,’” Neville recently recalled…
