Wakin’ Bakin’ is closing its flagship restaurant in New Orleans’ Mid-City neighborhood, ending more than a decade of flipping pancakes and frying eggs inside a turquoise house that became a neighborhood refuge for slow mornings and late-night recoveries.
The restaurant announced Monday on social media that its final day on Banks Street is July 15, adding that its outpost in the French Quarter will remain open. It thanked customers for 15 years of support and said “to keep our spirits light, we’ll spend the upcoming months reminiscing and appreciating” the location.
The closure is the latest Mid-City fixture to shutter in recent months, even as new restaurants continue to open in the neighborhood. In April, Pho House closed after serving bowls of pho on North Carrollton Avenue since shortly after Hurricane Katrina. This month, Parkview Tavern made its last call two years after the owners of Blue Oak BBQ purchased the dive bar.
At the same time, the neighborhood’s dining scene has continued to evolve, welcoming additions such as the European-inspired bistro Charmant, the Thai restaurant Chada and the smash burger joint 2 Potnas…
