Mayor Helena Moreno has tapped an advisory committee to explore how best to redevelop New Orleans’ aging City Hall and Civil District Court, after Gov. Jeff Landry blocked state funding that would have assisted that effort.
The mayor has asked 11 civic leaders to kick off planning for the revamp of the 1950s-era buildings, which have been a thorn in New Orleans mayors’ sides for decades. She sought $5.1 million in cash from the Legislature this session and was approved for $2 million.
But Landry vetoed that amount, a move Moreno at the time called “deeply disappointing.” It was just a slice of the $33 million total in state funding to New Orleans approved by lawmakers but blocked by the governor this year…
