Southeast Louisiana parishes announce preparations for tropical weather

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Parish governments are announcing preparations for anticipated tropical weather.

Orleans Parish

According to the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, they are enhancing staffing levels, lowering canal levels to increase stormwater storage capacity and cleaning catch basins throughout the system. Officials said they have addressed recent issues at Drainage Pump Station 7 through revised procedures and protocols and retraining of staff. 87 of 93 major drainage pumps are available for service and there are additional and temporary pumps as well.

Jefferson Parish

Jefferson Parish officials are asking residents to prepare and remain weather aware. Jefferson Parish Public Works crews have been cleaning catch basins, and residents are asked to clear debris from streets and drains around their properties. Officials said 196 out of 198 pumps are in service and portable pumps are ready, if required. All pump stations will be manned throughout the duration of the event and canals will be lowered before.

Beginning Tuesday, July 21, at 7:00 p.m. the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations center will be staffed 24 hours through the duration of the event. Residents in need of assistance can call the EOC at 504-349-5360.

St. Charles Parish

St. Charles Parish officials said the Department of Public Works is preparing by checking pump stations, clearing storm drains and ensuring all pump stations are fully operational. Residents are urged to refrain from placing new debris at the curb and to reduce flooding by keeping ditches clean and clear.

The Des Allemands Boat Launch and Sellers Canal Sector Gate will close at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 21. Sandbag locations are open for St. Charles Parish residents at the West Bank Bridge Park, East Bank Bridge Park and Badeaux Lane in Des Allemands.

Terrebonne Parish

Terrebonne Parish President Jason Bergeron encouraged residents to clean storm drains, ditches and canals. He said if residents have issues, they should call the Drainage Department at 985-873-6717.
