Define diva as a single Honduran mom working day and night to make a better life for her two sons, and you’ve met Iris Cardona, a.k.a. the Tacos Diva. Cardona, 40, moved to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and started her Tacos Diva food truck, cooking homemade Mexican, Honduran and Salvadoran food.
Now, she has her own brick-and-mortar restaurant. Sitting in the cobalt blue building at 2633 St. Claude Ave, it’s a great new spot for classic tacos, ceviche, margaritas and more.
Cardona opened as Tacos Diva Bar & Grill on July 1, and for now, the interior of the 60-seat restaurant reflects the previous restaurant, The 337, and its chef’s focus on central Louisiana food and heritage. There’s still a large bayou mural from artist Scott Guion on one wall, but now with a Tacos Diva sign in the middle of the scene, getting the side eye from a white egret…
