Mayor Helena Moreno’s administration on Wednesday announced an overhaul of the city’s sanitation operations, after an audit found the city is paying for sanitation and recycling for thousands of locations that are vacant or ineligible for service.
The administration’s effort, dubbed the Sanitation Accountability and Funding Reform Initiative, is aimed at improving the accuracy of the service location count, analyzing the cost of service and coming up with a proposal for a new monthly sanitation fee. Officials say the new fee proposal will be presented to City Council next week.
“We are correcting years of problems instead of passing them on to another administration, and we are going to build a sanitation system that is accurate, accountable and financially sustainable,” Moreno said in a statement…
