Trial date set over Orleans Parish jailbreak as judge sanctions charges

Eight of the 10 alleged escapees in last year’s brazen Orleans Parish jailbreak sat huddled in a New Orleans courtroom Friday as prosecutors from Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office laid out the state’s case against them.

Derrick Groves, a purported ringleader, and several other alleged escapees wore bright orange jail scrubs as they sat cuffed and shackled in a jury box guarded by courthouse deputies and corrections officers.

Criminal District Judge Leon Roche found probable cause for the simple escape charges against each of the eight defendants and set a “must go” trial date for Sept. 15. Roche said he will deny any request to postpone it…
