Montclair Schools End Education Benefit for Staffers’ Kids Amid Budget Crisis

Starting in the next academic year, Montclair Public Schools will no longer provide “tuition-free enrollment” to the nonresident children of staff members, a benefit the district maintained before and during its fiscal crisis, according to school officials.

Superintendent Ruth B. Turner said a policy put in place under former Superintendent Jonathan Ponds, who served Montclair from July 2020 until his death in July 2024, offered the free education to children of nonresident staff employed with Montclair for more than three years.

“Given the district’s financial circumstances, it was determined that continuing to provide tuition-free enrollment for nonresident students was no longer fiscally sustainable,” Turner told Montclair Local. “The revised approach aligns the district’s practice with the board-approved tuition structure while preserving the opportunity for nonresident employees to enroll their children if they choose to do so.”
