Formed 60 years earlier and disbanded in 2023, the Newark Boys Chorus was a world-renowned choir that performed regularly in New Jersey’s largest city and throughout the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia.
The group’s young male sopranos, or “trebles,” and slightly deeper-voiced altos, or “meanes,” were global ambassadors for a city that rarely got much good international press, if any at all, and also gave the world Sarah Vaughan, Whitney Houston and Queen Latifah, among others.
