PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Area food banks are starting their summer meal programs, offering meals for children who otherwise rely on their schools for free or reduced meals during the school year.
Hunger is one of the most severe roadblocks to the learning process and lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle of poor performance once the school year begins. Hunger may also make children more prone to illnesses and other health issues.
