Virginia’s expanded seat belt requirement turns one as push grows for stronger penalties

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – July 1 marks one year since a new seat belt law took effect, requiring everyone in a vehicle, front or back, to buckle up.

It has also been nearly six years since Christopher King, for whom the law is dedicated, died while riding in the back seat of a car that went airborne and landed on its side. Everyone else in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt and survived. King did not. The Christopher King Foundation says the law’s implementation was a major step, but there is still more work to be done.
