SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY)- The Smithfield Police Department announces the launch of their Flock Safety Transparency Portal, giving the public a closer look at how their Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology is being used.
Through the portal, community members can view:
- Flock Safety usage statistics
- How long data is retained
- Policies and safeguards governing the system
- Information about searches and system use
- Examples of how this technology has assisted our agency
In a Facebook post, Smithfield Police said: “Flock Safety has become an important investigative tool for our department, assisting with criminal investigations while providing safeguards and accountability around its use. The Transparency Portal provides another way for our community to see how this technology is being utilized.”
