SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) – A firefighter faces charges after being accused of driving under the influence while operating a firetruck in Smithfield.
On September 21, a firetruck was en route to a possible structure fire on Lakeview Cove when it crashed and overturned in the 300 block of South Church Street. Officials say the driver, 31-year-old William Collins, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and later released.

On October 6, Virginia State Police confirmed Collins faces charges in connection to that crash including failure to drive right of the center of the highway and driving under the influence of alcohol.
