A woman and her child were in critical condition Thursday afternoon after a sneaker wave at Baker Beach dragged them into the ocean, the San Francisco Fire Department said.
The mother and pre-teen daughter were standing near the rocks at the beach’s northeast corner when a powerful wave “came out of nowhere and grabbed them,” fire Capt. Jonathan Baxter said. The wave pulled them from the shoreline to about 100 feet into the water.
The fire department responded to the beach around 3:15 p.m., Baxter said. By that time, bystanders had pulled the pair from the water to the beach.
