FasTrak toll tags about to expire for some drivers

San Francisco (KRON) — Bay Area drivers are running out of time to update certain FasTrak toll tags which are set to expire at the end of the year.

In October, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) announced that toll tags manufactured prior to 2019 will need to be upgraded. According to a letter from Bay Area FasTrak, which was sent to certain affected drivers in July, California is discontinuing the technology used in the older toll tags.

Starting next year those toll tags will no longer be recognized by the tolling equipment. This applies to all Bay Area bridges and express lanes.

According to FasTrak, drivers will not be required to pay a new deposit for the updated tags and their prepaid balances will automatically transfer. The letter sent to drivers says failure to update the toll tags could lead to toll invoices or violation notices being sent to drivers…
