Berkeley mail theft suspect had USPS key, police say

Police have arrested a man they believe used a U.S. Postal Service master key in a string of mail thefts last year. It is at least the second time this year a Berkeley mail theft suspect has been caught with a master key.

The Berkeley Police Department first sought a warrant for the 46-year-old San Jose man’s arrest after identifying him in surveillance footage from four burglaries in April and May 2025. They believe he stole mail and packages from apartment buildings at 2175 University Ave., 1935 Addison St., 2404 Fulton St. and 2607 Ellsworth St., according to a BPD statement filed in Alameda County Superior Court.

It is not clear how the man got the key. A spokesperson for BPD said they did not have details on where it came from; spokespeople for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service did not immediately respond to inquiries from Berkeleyside…
