California rabies warnings are rising
Rabies is rare, but it is one of the most serious diseases people can encounter through infected animals. California health officials are reporting rabies-positive wildlife in several areas as the CDC warns of increased rabies exposures across the country.
The good news is that rabies can be prevented when people get prompt medical care after a possible exposure. The key is knowing which animals can carry it, what counts as exposure, and what to do if contact happens.

CDC reports a nationwide increase
The CDC issued a health advisory on Sept. 10 after seeing more reports of people being exposed to rabid or potentially rabid animals. From July through August 2026, the agency received 17% more rabies-related inquiries than during the same period in 2025.
The CDC also reported higher use of rabies prevention treatments. Pharmacy data through Sept. 2 showed rabies vaccine use up about 33%, while use of rabies immunoglobulin increased about 76% compared with the same period last year.
