A 25-year-old Bay Area doughnut shop closes as its building becomes a development

After 25 years of selling glazed doughnuts and bear claws in downtown San Mateo, no-frills doughnut shop Donut Delite shut down in September. “We are truly grateful for the memories and relationships we have made,” reads a letter posted in its front window. The San Mateo Daily Journal reported in May that the property owner sold the B Street building, which is set to be redeveloped into a four-story building. Donut Delite owner Sung Khov, who operates two other locations in Redwood City and Menlo Park, told the outlet that he hopes to find a nearby space at a more affordable price.

Upscale bar Barbarossa Lounge closed on Sept. 26, after 11 years in San Francisco’s North Beach. It served modern and classic cocktails inside of a Montgomery Street building that survived the 1906 earthquake and was once a jailhouse. In an Instagram post announcing the closure, Barbarossa Lounge wrote that owners were unable to reach a long-term agreement with their landlord. “We made it through the pandemic, the slow recovery of downtown San Francisco and dramatic changes in nightlife and corporate events. Through all of it our team continued to show up and our guests continued to support us. That is what we want to remember,” the post reads.

The Rustic has closed after three years of serving Cal-Italian fare in San Francisco. Hoodline reported that the restaurant shut down in early September. An employee at owner Zoti Ali Turap’s sister restaurant Tavola Rustica in Larkspur told Hoodline that the Rustic was sold.

Baba’s House, a mahjong den and bar in downtown Oakland home to Filipino-Cantonese bar 13 Orphans, closed on Sept. 26 after five years. Chef Eman Garcia told East Bay Nosh that there are plans to host pop-ups and community events elsewhere…
