Fire caused by bicycle battery forces evacuation of S.F. apartment building

A faulty lithium-iron battery-powered bicycle burst into flames in a South of Market apartment complex Saturday, forcing the building’s evacuation as San Francisco firefighters scrambled to put out the blaze.

Firefighters were called to a six-story apartment complex in the 1000 block of Mission Street just after noon, Capt. Jonathan Baxter said. They arrived to find a fire on the building’s third floor, with smoke filling the building’s hallways.
