California heat wave to give way to sharp cooldown, possible Sierra snow

California’s exceptionally hot start to October will soon give way to a major change. Cooler weather is expected, but beyond that, things are uncertain. Possibilities this weekend range from Sierra Nevada snow to rain (due to hurricane leftovers) in the southern part of the state.

What’s clear is that the high-pressures system responsible for the triple-digit heat will get pushed off to the east Saturday as multiple low-pressure systems merge over the West Coast. That includes the remnants of Hurricane Rachel, which continues to spin in the open Pacific Ocean well offshore of Southern California.

At a minimum, a significant cooldown is inbound. The exact position of the low-pressure systems will determine just how pronounced this cooldown will be, but high temperatures by Sunday will likely be more than 30 degrees colder than the record-breaking heat that started the month…
