Missy Franklin was a Cal superstar. Then an Olympic letdown made her question everything

Missy Franklin Johnson’s time at Cal wasn’t long: really just about 19 months. But it was significant, not only for the Bears who won the NCAA swimming championship while she was there, but for the swimmer, who remembers her time in Berkeley as a magical respite between Olympics.

“The two years I had competing for Cal were truly some of the best of my life,” said Franklin Johnson. “Although my time there wasn’t extensive, it was so meaningful. So it feels special to have that part of my career recognized in such a meaningful way.”
