Three more California residents poisoned by wild mushrooms in ‘unprecedented outbreak’

Three more adults were hospitalized in Northern California this week after consuming poisonous mushrooms, raising the total number of people affected by the wild fungus since November to nearly 50.

California health officials said the three victims foraged the mushrooms in the Deer Park area near Silverado Trail in Napa County. None of the people were residents of the county, according to the Napa County Health and Human Services Agency.

All of the cases of mushroom poisoning in California since November have been reported in Bay Area counties, according to the California Department of Health. Of the at least 47 cases in that time period, four have died, and at least three others required a liver transplant to survive, officials said.
