Villager refuses to provide breath sample in DUI investigation

A Village of Calumet Grove resident was arrested on a drunk driving charge after police say he repeatedly ran red lights and ultimately grounded his car on a curb.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies arrested 53-year-old Thomas Joseph La Rosa shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

According to an arrest affidavit, a deputy was stationed at the intersection of SE 80th Street and U.S. Hwy. 441 when he observed a white Toyota Prius make a “slow, wide turn,” nearly striking a concrete barrier. A minute later, the Prius was seen traveling westbound, proceeding through two solid red lights.

The deputy watched the vehicle pull to the south side of the road while still facing westbound. When the traffic light turned green, the deputy approached the vehicle, which was now slowly driving westbound on the eastbound shoulder of the road…
