MUSTANG, Okla. – A Mustang celebration was paused on Sunday when a small grass fire broke out during a fireworks display at the annual Family Freedom Fest.
Fire officials say the fire started just minutes after the show began when wind gusts pushed sparks from fireworks into nearby tall grass. It was quickly contained, and fire officials say the event’s safety plan worked as intended.
What caused the fire?
Fire Marshal Eric Halter says wind gusts carried sparks from fireworks into nearby tall grass, which sparked the fire. “When they were setting off the fireworks, a wind gust came through and threw embers into tall grass, starting a fire,” Halter said.
How quickly did crews respond?
Officials say the fire was handled quickly and was out before fire crews even arrived on scene.
“We did stay to help put out some hot spots,” Halter said.
