Omaha council upholds ban on firefighter fundraising during work hours

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Omaha City Council this week upheld a ban that prevents firefighters from raising money while on duty, blocking the return of a fundraising campaign for muscular dystrophy.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, members voted down an amended ordinance that would have allowed city employees to fundraise while on the job under certain circumstances. The ordinance would have allowed Omaha firefighters to restart their “Fill the Boot” campaign, which raises money for those living with muscular dystrophy.

Sandra Day, co-founder of Brian Smiles, watched as city leaders rejected the measure.

“I don’t understand the reasoning why three said no, ” Day said. “It just doesn’t make any sense to me.”

Day lost her son Brian to muscular dystrophy in 2013 and started a foundation called Brian Smiles in his honor. She said the ruling will mean less money for resources and said other fundraising methods don’t match the Fill the Boot campaign…
