OMAHA, NE — Extreme heat warnings remain in effect across large parts of the central and southern United States as a powerful heat dome keeps temperatures and humidity dangerously high for a second straight day.
At least 40 million people were under warnings on Sunday. Heat index values topped 100 degrees from Minnesota to Mississippi, with the hot air pushing west into southern California and Nevada.

The National Weather Service said parts of the Southwest could reach 120 degrees. Meteorologists said the pattern is being driven by a heat dome, which traps hot air and prolongs dangerous conditions.
