OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is auctioning off a party bus to the public after the company that owned it refused to pay almost $8,000 in taxes.
Sheriff’s office issues thousands of distress warrants each year
The Sheriff’s Office says it issues approximately 3,500 distress warrants a year to individuals who don’t pay their taxes, but says it’s rare for a case to be this large and non-compliant.
Distress warrants are issued by the treasurer’s office for unpaid business personal property taxes and are levied against business property, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office says the tax owed is based on the depreciated value of assets purchased by a business. Every year the treasurer’s and assessor’s offices calculate the tax owed, and if it goes unfiled or unpaid, the assessor’s, treasurer’s and Sheriff’s offices send out notices, according to the Sheriff’s Office…
