Bellevue University students help sequence mushroom DNA to track Nebraska’s soil health

BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) – College students are helping researchers understand Nebraska’s soil health by sequencing DNA from mushrooms collected across the state.

Mia Arnold, a junior at Bellevue University, had never set foot in a lab until her professor introduced her to the project.

“It was a fun opportunity and I decided to go for it,” Arnold said.

Since 2023, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has been collecting mushroom samples across the state. Starting in 2024, the university has been helping to sequence mushroom DNA from collected samples…
