NWS warns of potentially dangerous situation in KMAland

(Valley) — KMAland residents should be on guard for the potential of severe weather late this afternoon and evening.

Earlier this afternoon, National Weather Service officials moved the southwest corner of Iowa–including Page, Fremont, Mills and Montgomery counties to an enhanced risk for tornadoes late this afternoon. Weather service officials place the chances of tornadic activity this afternoon and evening in southwest Iowa and southeast Nebraska at 15-30%. Officials say the twisters could be strong if they develop as expected.

At around 1 p.m., the weather service’s Valley, Nebraska office issued a tornado watch is in effect until 8 p.m. for counties in southeast Nebraska, including Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee and Richardson counties. NWS officials called it a “particularly dangerous tornado watch,” one that is only issued a few times during the year. Other watches were expected to be issued as the afternoon progressed.
