Rising grocery costs drive more people to Omaha food pantries

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Local food pantries are seeing more people walk through their doors as grocery costs continue to rise.

Gary Henningsen volunteers at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry three days a week and said he and other volunteers have noticed an increase in people coming in.

“We’ve all been talking about how the numbers have grown over the last several months, probably increasing in the 10 to 20% category,” Henningsen said.

For him, it’s a concerning trend that the pantry is trying to stay on top of.

“People are hurting for food and they’re looking around and they’re looking for places where they can go and get food. We try to have a varied sort that they can do so they can come here and get food,” Henningsen said…
