Mead Botanical Garden Begins Watch For One-Night-Only ‘Queen of the Night’ Bloom

Mead Botanical Garden is officially on bloom watch for one of its most fleeting annual events.

The garden’s Night-Blooming Cereus, also known as the “Queen of the Night,” has started producing buds, signaling that its once-a-year bloom could happen in the coming weeks. The vine-like cactus typically blooms for just one night near the end of May or during the first week of June.

Several of the plants can be found throughout the Winter Park garden, including one climbing a pine tree just inside the front gate. When bloom night arrives, the flowers are expected to begin opening around dusk, unfurling large, fragrant white blooms that will be gone by sunrise.

The exact date is up to the plant…
