KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Switzerland and Argentina kick off the World Cup quarterfinals Saturday at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium, and the city’s Swiss community is marking a milestone: the last time Switzerland reached this stage of the tournament was 1954 — more than 70 years ago.
From a family that moved here from Switzerland in 1986 to a chocolate shop now in its third generation, Kansas City’s ties to Saturday’s match run deep.
‘Just to get over the hump’
Dave Von Fintel moved from Switzerland to the Kansas City metro in 1986. He attended the University of Missouri, raised three children — all dual Swiss-American citizens — and said the family travels back to Switzerland once a year.
His son Kai Von Fintel said the team’s run has been a long time coming…
