BASEHOR, Kan. (KCTV) – A fire burning in a mulch pile at the site of a new subdivision in Basehor, Kansas, has covered the town in smoke and prompted a wave of online speculation about its cause.
The pile sits in a field that residents say used to be a forest that was recently cleared for the development. The area now has no access to water, and paved roads end before reaching the location of the fire, creating obstacles for crews working to put it out.
Mike Lingenfelser, fire chief at Fairmount Township, the department that covers Basehor and Linwood, said crews are tackling the smoke head-on, though many residents believe firefighters are nowhere to be seen.
