‘All he wanted to do is play outside:’ toddler hit by car remembered

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — The death of a toddler hit and run over outside of an Independence apartment complex parking lot Saturday, remains under investigation.

Police have updated their preliminary investigation determining a 2017 Cadillac XT5 was pulling forward out of a parking spot when the driver hit and ran over the child. Family identified the boy as 2-year-old Aziel Zermeno.

“All he wanted to do is play outside, he loved his scooter, he loved it,” Aziel’s mother Cierra McKendrick said.

Aziel’s scooter is now part of a growing memorial outside his apartment including his little shoes and some of his stuffed animals and toys…
