African American Museum in Philadelphia debuts new exhibit from CCH Pounder of ‘Avatar,’ ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ fame

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — “Shared Vision” is the new exhibition that debuted this Saturday at the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP), and features art from the personal collection of actress CCH Pounder.

Dejay Duckett, vice president of curatorial services at AAMP, spent two years working with Pounder on the collection that is now on display at the museum.

“A lot of pieces in her collection are figurative and portraits,” he said. “And it gives our audiences a chance to see themselves and see people they know and feel that that reflection and these pieces just, they kind of vibrate right off the walls.”

Pounder, who starred in James Cameron’s “Avatar” and is a regular cast member on “NCIS: New Orleans,” said the pieces allow visitors to expand on their idea of African, African American and African diaspora art.

She also participated in a community discussion on Saturday about the collection.

“It first starts by just looking at things in books, hearing art talks, hearing what people are saying about the work and why they do it,” she said. “Some of them, it’s simple as I want to have images of Black people. It’s just that basic and that’s important too. And then other times it’s an emotional degree that you start to see after a while.”
