Tempe settles lawsuit for $150K over man’s 2022 controversial drowning

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — The Tempe City Council approved a six-figure settlement for the mother of Sean Bickings, whose 2022 drowning caused controversy and sparked change at Tempe Town Lake.

The council passed the $150,000 settlement on April 30 for Turee Turo.

“We hope the closure of this litigation brings comfort to those who mourn his loss,” a city spokesperson said in an email.

The lawsuit was filed in May 2023, seeking $3 million in damages, and claimed the incident revealed gaps in how city staff and police handled water rescues at the lake…
