Point of View: The story behind the statue of George Washington and Guyasuta on Mount Washington

Amid the stunning views and landmark restaurants that dot Mt. Washington is a bronze statue that depicts two of the most iconic historical figures to traverse Western Pennsylvania.

The Point of View sculpture was created by James A. West and dedicated on Oct. 25, 2006, by then-Mayor Luke Ravenstahl. It depicts George Washington in a 1770 encounter with Seneca tribe leader Guyasuta. Both men are in possession of — but not brandishing — weapons.

“We came up with this idea on how America was made,” said West, who grew up in the Fox Chapel area and splits his time between his studios in Miami and Blawnox. “I love the story because it really is about putting your differences aside.”…
