A man was shot in the abdomen Tuesday night in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood, and officers still hadn’t located the actual crime scene as of Wednesday. Pittsburgh public safety officials were called to the 400 block of Brownsville Road around 8:25 p.m. after reports that a man had been shot, but when police arrived, they couldn’t find him there.
The mystery deepened when a neighboring jurisdiction told Pittsburgh police it had a man matching the victim’s description in its care, according to WTAE. The adult man had sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was conscious, alert, and speaking with officers and medics by the time they reached him. He was ultimately transported by Pittsburgh EMS to an area hospital in stable condition.
Despite being able to talk, the victim was uncooperative with officers, the station’s report notes, leaving investigators with little to go on beyond the wound itself and the neighboring jurisdiction’s tip. Pennsylvania law requires physicians and hospital staff treating gunshot wounds to notify police by phone and in writing regardless of whether a patient consents or cooperates, a mandate under Pennsylvania statute 18 Pa.C.S. ยง 5106 that explains how authorities learned of the victim’s whereabouts even as he declined to talk. Pittsburgh’s Violent Crime Unit detectives are now investigating the shooting, per the same account.
A Familiar Trouble Spot
Brownsville Road has seen repeated bursts of gunfire in recent years. In December 2024, police responding to a six-round ShotSpotter alert on the 300 block of Brownsville Road found a man in his early 20s critically wounded in the back, according to the City of Pittsburgh.
