PITTSBURGH, PA / STEUBENVILLE, OH (WTRF) — Nurses and advanced practitioners at UPMC Magee-Women’s Hospital are criticizing the reported $120 million price tag tied to UPMC’s purchase of Trinity Health System in the Ohio Valley.

SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, which represents the Magee nurses and advanced practitioners, is calling on UPMC to invest more in staffing standards, nurse retention, compensation and benefits in Pittsburgh.
The criticism comes after CommonSpirit Trinity Health System completed the transfer of Trinity Health System to UPMC, effective Oct. 1. The deal includes Trinity West and Trinity East in Steubenville, Trinity Twin City Medical Center in Dennison, Trinity St. Clairsville Neighborhood Hospital in St. Clairsville and all associated clinics and care sites.

Julie Nuss, a registered nurse in the Mother-Baby Unit speaking on behalf of Magee Nurses and Advanced Practitioners United, said the union believes the money used for the Trinity purchase should instead be invested in staffing and retaining experienced nurses.
“The revelation that UPMC executives spent $120 million to buy an Ohio healthcare corporation is really disappointing, because they should be investing their massive profits in evidence-based staffing standards and retention of experienced nurses, so we can ensure our patients receive the highest quality care right here in Pittsburgh,” Nuss said…
