Mayor Ed Gainey was an in-studio guest today on the Big K Morning Show, where he addressed issues ranging from racism to development.
Reacting to criticism from developers about difficulty in starting new projects, the mayor said he needs help from developers to stabilize neighborhoods, and will continue to insist developers include affordable housing in their proposals.
About racism directed his way, Pittsburgh’s first Black mayor said it doesn’t bother him:
“I know all about racism in this city but what I also know if you were brought up in a way that makes you racist, then what can I do to change that? There’s nothing I can do and I can’t go out of my way to change that,” said Gainey.
Mr. Gainey also said it’s not true his staff is all Black.
He says he has people from all background on his staff.
