In the African American communities of Pittsburgh, generations of families are connected by a shared legacy—they entrusted their children’s care to Dr. Catherine Ngozi Udekwu. For her patients, she was a constant, a confidant, and a cornerstone of community health. Dr. Udekwu passed away on February 1, 2026, but her impact continues to resonate throughout her adopted city and the medical community.
Dr. Udekwu, was born in Nigeria to a medical family. Her father, Dr. Fabian Udekwu, performed the first open-heart surgery in West Africa, and her late brother Anthony was a trauma surgeon. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Nigeria, she completed her residency at UPMC Mercy.
