Toxic blue-green algae health alert issued for parts of Lake Okeechobee

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Health officials are warning people and pet owners to avoid contact with parts of Lake Okeechobee after tests detected harmful blue-green algae toxins.

The Florida Department of Health in Martin County issued a health alert Friday for three sampling locations identified as Lake Okeechobee NES135, Lake Okeechobee Eastshore and Lake Okeechobee L004. The alert follows water samples collected Tuesday, July 21.
