St. Lucie County firefighters join multi-county battle against 4,743-acre Florida wildfire

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A fast-moving wildfire burning across north and central Florida has prompted a multi-agency response, including support from the St. Lucie County Fire District.

The fire, known as the Railroad Complex Fire, ignited in dry brush and timber along the rail line between Clay County and Putnam County. Investigators believe the blaze began near railroad infrastructure, where extreme heat, friction, and drought-stressed vegetation created conditions for rapid ignition and spread.

As the fire intensified earlier in the week, officials confirmed that an Amtrak train bound for New York was brought to a stop along the route when flames and heavy smoke cut off safe passage.
