Portland school changing name due to ‘anti-indigenous, child hostage-taking’ origin

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Several Portland schools could undergo name changes in the upcoming years.

On Tuesday, the Portland Public Schools Board of Education approved a resolution to rename Joseph Lane Middle School to Brentwood Middle School. The approval also makes it so the community will now be known as the Bears, instead of their former mascot, the Quasars.

LMS first opened in 1922 as the Errol Heights School, sixth grade teacher Beth Gardner said during a presentation.
