Two sisters turned their late father’s recipes into a thriving Cambodian bakery

When Soma Boriboune’s kidneys failed during the pandemic, she turned to her oven.

After a transplant and an ongoing battle with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, Boriboune found herself housebound and searching for something to hold onto. She found it in her sister, Youtheary Sim, and in the handwritten recipes of their late father, who died when the sisters were young. Together, they sifted through his recipes, reliving memories and flavors they had almost forgotten.

“We just sat and went through recipes,” Sim said. “We were like, ‘Okay, what was that one dessert dad made?’ That gave us time, not just for bonding and continuing our relationship as sisters, but our relationship with our father.”…
