Portland’s cost of living is ballooning as city tax, fee increases pile up. Residents feel the pain

Northeast Portland resident Terry Williams, 66, has felt the squeeze of a slate of local tax and fee increases over the years.

He’s “absolutely” aware that they’ve hit Portlanders far harder than residents in surrounding communities. So much so that he had to give up living alone.

“My apartment complex in Parkrose, I was there for eight years and the water and sewage killed me every month. It killed me,” Williams said. “I worked two jobs. I was hardly ever there. I wasn’t saving. I was living from paycheck to paycheck.”…
