Portland birthing center closes after nearly 30 years, leaving midwives unpaid

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A birthing center in southwest Portland ended service after nearly 30 years, surprising midwives and mothers who expected to give birth there.

Staff say Andaluz Waterbirth Center closed its doors once paychecks stopped coming. Hundreds of babies spanning generations have been born at the center. Midwives say they are left without pay and mothers say they are left in the dark.
