Amateur bakers thrill crowd – and tastebuds – at first-ever ‘Big Portland Bake Show’

Tucked off East Burnside Street, there’s a fortune-telling machine where Zoltar has been regularly spitting out fortunes.

Except it’s not Zoltar – not anymore. A cardboard cutout of another face has been draped over the well-known animatronic fortune-teller’s head – that of the even better-known Paul Hollywood, the British chef from “The Great British Bake Off.”

Which is only appropriate, for this is the courtyard not just of the Portland dessert bar Pix Pâtisserie but also the site of “The Big Portland Bake Show,” a two-day baking contest inspired by the popular British TV show…
