OPINION: When a joke stops being funny

The Lake Theater has built a reputation for witty, and occasionally snarky, marquee messages promoting the movies it is showing. While a few have raised eyebrows over the years, they have generally been viewed as good-natured attempts at humor. This week, however, I strongly feel that the theater crossed a line.

To promote The Odyssey, this week’s marquee read: “Before there were the Jews, there was The Odyssey.”

The theater’s staff and management decided to make Jews the joke, but we aren’t laughing…
