Why these Oregon school districts are facing deep cuts, despite more state money

Portland Public Schools’ push to chop at least $50 million from its budget for the upcoming school year has grabbed headlines, but the school district is far from alone in its fiscal woes.

One after another, school districts from around the metro area have announced that they too are facing budget deficits for the upcoming school year.

So far, none approach the size of the reductions faced by Portland, the state’s largest school district, which enrolls 42,785 students. Early plans called for Portland Public Schools to lose about 300 jobs…
